Manila: On Saturday, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao's Philippine island, resulting in a tsunami alert, in which small waves of the southern parts of the country and neighboring Indonesia were expected.

The American Geological Survey said that a depth of 59 kilometers (35 miles) in the southeast of the volcanic city came in the south-east quake, a week after which a tsunami that struck the volcano killed more than 400 people in Indonesia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that "dangerous tsunami waves coming from this earthquake are possible" on the shores of Indonesia and the Philippines ". Although the waves were estimated to be less than 30 cm (12 inches),

it was said, while the Philippine Monitor warned that there was a "slight sea level disturbance". The Philippine government seismic office said in its Tsunami warning, "People are advised to stay away from the coast and not to go to the coast of the Philippine Sea."

It has been said that in the south of the country cities experienced "moderately strong" shaking, civil security offices in the affected areas said that they do not have immediate reports of earthquake damage or casualties. According to the USGS, the number of casualties and damage was less, though it warned that recent earthquakes in the area had caused the landslide.

The Philippines and Indonesia are located on the so-called Ring of Fire, a vast Pacific Ocean region with many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The most recent major earthquake to attack the Philippines was in 2013 when 7.1-magnitude earthquake left more than 220 people and destroyed historic churches in the central islands.

Indonesia has been hit by two major tsunami this year. More than 400 people were killed at the end of last week when a volcano burst had a fatal wave on the coast of western Java island and south Sumatra. In September, an earthquake-tsunami killed nearly 2,200 people in Palu on Sulawesi Island, in which thousands of people were missing and dead.
